A shooting in Paterson early Friday left a 20-year-old city man dead, authorities said.

Police were called on a report of gunfire shortly before 1 a.m. near 53 Sandy Court, where they found Brian Taveras lying shot on the sidewalk, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Taveras was taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center, where he died around 1:15 a.m., the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Officials did not immediately announce any arrests or release any possible motive in the slaying.
