The stepson of a Paterson councilman, a 20-year-old NJIT student, was killed in a collision with a New Jersey Transit excavation vehicle in Newark Wednesday while riding his bike, authorities said.

Kevin Milfort-Sanchez, the son of 5th Ward Councilman Luis Velez, was hit near McCarter Highway and Gouverneur Street at about 8:30 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The driver of the construction vehicle stayed at the scene and no charges were filed as of Thursday evening, the prosecutor's office stated.

The vehicle was traveling north on McCarter Highway when it "collided" with the bicycle, the prosecutor's office stated.

Milfort-Sanchez was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Velez did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh offered his condolences.

"Our hearts are heavy at City Hall today," Sayegh said. "I ask all Patersonians to keep Councilman Luis Velez and his wife, Evelyn in their prayers. Their son Kevin was an all-star student and a genuine human being."

Funeral arrangements were not known as of Thursday.

Anyone with information about the collision can contact the Essex County Prosecutor's Tips Line at 877-847-7432.
