MANHATTAN — A young man described by family as loving and easygoing was tragically struck and killed by an MTA bus while crossing East 23rd Street late Thursday night, authorities said.
Amos Veloz, 21, of Washington Heights, was hit by a, X27 bus traveling eastbound while he was crossing in the middle of the street between Broadway and Madison Avenue about 11:44 p.m., the NYPD and MTA said.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and pronounced him dead, police said.
No criminality is suspected in the incident.
The victim's family, who described him as quiet and mild-mannered, said Veloz was leaving his job as a busboy at a nearby restaurant when the tragic incident happened.
"He took everything in stride. If you insulted him, he'd just laugh it off," said uncle Sergio Gomez, Jr.
