The Issue

Growing up in our community, the weight of racism has been heavy, particularly for black students like myself. Time after time, we face discriminatory remarks, unfair disciplinary actions, and biased educational standards that aim to suppress our true potential. The emotional toll of being treated differently because of the color of our skin is not just personal—it affects our families, our friends, and ultimately, the fabric of our school communities.

Statistics show that black students are disproportionately disciplined, facing suspensions and expulsions at rates three to four times higher than their white counterparts. In many classrooms, we are still grappling with outdated curriculums that fail to provide an inclusive history and cultural understanding. This systemic issue isn't just a violation of our right to an equal education—it's a violation of our human rights.

It's time for schools to take immediate action. We need comprehensive anti-racism training for teachers and staff to tackle conscious and subconscious biases. Schools should implement inclusive curriculums that reflect a diverse range of cultures and histories. Moreover, we need transparent reporting and accountability measures to ensure discriminatory practices are swiftly addressed and corrected.

By creating supportive and respectful learning environments, we can empower black students to excel and achieve their aspirations without the hinderance of racial bias. Change is not only possible but necessary to foster innovation and bring about a brighter future for everyone in our community.

Racism has no place in our schools. We urge you to sign this petition demanding that our school boards and educational policymakers make these changes a priority. Your voice matters, and together, we can push for an education system that truly embraces diversity and inclusion for all.
