Stop public pension for MPs & MLAs earning more than ₹30 Lakh a year
The Issue
As an ordinary Indian citizen and taxpayer, I've been grappling with the reality that while I and my fellow peers work hard to sustain our livelihoods, we have little to no social security benefits to count on. Ironically, Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs), who earn significantly higher than the average Indian, enjoy substantial pension benefits on top of their already substantial income and assets. This disparity is not just unfair but unjustified.
Currently, MPs and MLAs receive a lifelong pension after serving just a single term, irrespective of how wealthy they already are or how much they continue to earn post their political careers. Consider this: the average per capita income of an Indian citizen stands at a modest ₹1.47 lakhs annually, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. In stark contrast, many of our elected representatives have net earnings exceeding ₹30 lakh annually.
Why should taxpayers, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet, be responsible for financing pensions of public officials who are already financially secure? It's high time we draw a line. We need a system where public funds are utilized judiciously and equitably, ensuring that such pensions are allocated to those who genuinely need them—not to those whose net worth dwarfs the savings of the common man.
A simple solution is to impose a threshold: any MP or MLA with an annual income above ₹30 lakh should not be eligible for a public pension. This adjustment would not only save taxpayer money but also realign the distribution of benefits towards areas that need them more—such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, which are in dire need of an overhaul.
This isn't just a fight for fairness; it's a call for action towards financial prudence and ethical governance. It's about holding our representatives accountable and ensuring that our hard-earned money is spent wisely.
Join me in advocating for a more equitable system. Sign this petition to urge the Indian government to implement income-based eligibility for MP and MLA pensions. Let's make our voices heard and push for the change we deserve.
