Earth Action
Nov 30, 2016
Many thanks for signing Earth Action's petition to stop snowmobiles from squeezing skiers and snowshoers off the unploughed roads. Today the PEI legislative assembly passed Bill 52 which will lead to new regulations allowing snowmobiles to legally drive on unploughed heritage and seasonal roads. All parties said they support snowmobiles using the same trails as skiers and snowshoers. The Liberals made sure to pack the gallery with snowmobile dealers and members of the PEI Snowmobile Association, and spent a fair bit of time fawning and gushing over these people. You can watch this spectacle, including questions from the other parties and their excuses for passing the bill, on the Legislative Assembly website. It's an eye-opener. It starts at the 2 hour and 5 minute mark: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/snowmobiles-pei-roads-legislation-sharon-labchuk-dale-hickox-1.3872852 The petition and the campaign remains active. Here's what you can do: 1. Continue to share the petition on social media and by email. Has everyone in your household signed? Send the petition link via Facebook message to 10 friends. 2. Call your MLA and leave a message - you're not likely to get them by phone. This is one of the more important things you can do as phone calls are much more effective than petitions and emails. Their contacts are here: http://www.assembly.pe.ca/current-members 3. Letters to the newspapers are effective and encourage other people to speak up. You can send the same letter to all of the newspapers. We had media coverage today on both CBC Radio news: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/snowmobiles-pei-roads-legislation-sharon-labchuk-dale-hickox-1.3872852 and TV news. Starts at the 9:55 mark: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/cbc-compass-november-30-2016-1.3875565 Thank you for caring! Sharon Labchuk
