Stop phone number recycling in Nigeria without exhaustive contact attempts

I recently experienced the tremendous upheaval of having my MTN phone number recycled despite being in the midst of active and crucial conversations that impact my career trajectory. The loss was overwhelming—suddenly, I found myself severed from essential contacts on WhatsApp and dangerously exposed, as the new phone number holder could potentially access my account. What unfolded was a distressing cascade of issues, all stemming from this unexpected policy. It’s an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone else.
Phone numbers today act as more than just a dial-in portal. They are intrinsic to our digital identities, serving as authentication tools for email accounts, messengers, social media profiles, fintech platforms, and much more. The policy adopted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and telecom companies of recycling phone numbers without exhausting all possible avenues—such as email notifications, Next Of Kin (NOK), and alternate contact methods—to establish contact with the owner, poses a significant threat to individual digital security and privacy.
This practice, when not properly managed, can cause a catastrophic chain reaction. A seemingly simple act of recycling an active number can destabilize an entire digital persona, seeping into every aspect of an individual’s digital life—from personal to professional interactions. The aftershocks of these interruptions undermine trust in the systems meant to protect us.
While companies might argue the necessity and benefits of recycling numbers, the potential risks and real-life damages inflicted upon individuals far outweigh those advantages. Comprehensive attempts to reach out to the number's owner should be mandated before the number is deemed recyclable. This includes a robust checking mechanism to ensure the number is truly inactive and no longer integral to someone’s active communication channels.
We call upon the Nigerian Communications Commission and all telecom companies to safeguard their customers’ digital identities by revising current policies. Every feasible method should be deployed to reach out to and protect number owners before reassigning their numbers to prevent unnecessary distress and compromise.
