For more than eight years, PM Mark Rutte (VVD) tried to undermine and replace Assad's government in Syria. The Dutch government even supported jihadist groups, both financially and materially. This contributed to an already terrible civil war.
PM Mark Rutte personally played a role in stopping an independent investigation into this Dutch support for Syrian rebels between 2015 and 2018. In Nov. 2020 during PM question time, PM Rutte acknowledged that he had made efforts to influence the vote on a parliamentary motion calling for an investigation. "I interfered in the matter because I think it is important to interfere," said PM Mark Rutte.
Only a few days before, at Nieuwsuur TV Rutte pretended to know nothing about ‘interference’. But then it wás revealed that the PM indeed had personally interfered. Three sources within the government indicated that Rutte personally tried to stop the investigation.
When this was revealed, PM Rutte suddenly said that an investigation could embarrass and endanger allies. But with this response, Rutte ignored the fact that the independent investigation also focused on the role of PM Rutte himsélf in setting up the controversial program. And which allies? Did he mean Israël, which is still active on Syrian territory to this day?!
Members of parliament said: "PM Rutte is afraid. We know that terrible human rights violations have been committed in our name", "PM Rutte is trying to cover up information again, just like in the horrible Childcare Benefits Scandal!"
In 2018 Nieuwsuur TV and Trouw newspaper revealed that between May 2015 and the spring of 2018, a total of 22 armed groups in Syria were supported by PM Rutte's program. These secret organizations violated human rights and collaborated with terrorists. They did not receive weapons from the Netherlands, but Non-Lethal Assistance (NLA), such as cars, communication equipment and uniforms. But further research has shown that these also played an important role in acts of war.
In addition to Gaza and recently Iran and Lebanon, Mark Rutte's 'close friend' and ally, the accused War Criminal Netanyahu, is also still militarily active on Syrian territory. It is important for NATO allies to know how NATO SG Mark Rutte is really operating in this situation.
