Stop Manipulation, Stop Phoenix Rector, Free NJZ!!!

Das Problem

We, the undersigned, are raising concerns about the toxic and harmful behaviors demonstrated by some individuals in K-pop fandoms, particularly acts of manipulation and defamation. While fandom is meant to bring people together through shared interests, certain actions cross the line and cause unwarranted damage to individuals, groups, and their reputations.

Manipulation and defamation, whether in online discourse or organized actions such as petitions, are serious issues that foster division and harm. Such behavior reflects poorly on the broader fan community and undermines the values of respect and positivity that should guide any fan culture.

For example, we recently encountered a petition created by an NJZ hater named Phoenix Rector targeting their involvement in a Calvin Klein campaign. Her petition was not only manipulative but also defamatory. It baselessly vilified NJZ, claiming that their fight against a system attempting to erase them was wrong. The petition falsely framed NJZ’s advocacy for their right to work as villainous behavior.

Furthermore, she claims that NJZ spreads a harmful influence on young people. But consider this: South Korea is a country where misogyny is a daily problem, where young people are forced to follow unjustifiable rules, and where the K-pop industry often oppresses trainees and idols due to a lack of protections. This is a place where the suicide rate is one of the highest in the world, driven by mental health struggles caused by immense pressure and stress.

And yet, NJZ is being labeled as the problem—for speaking up? Are they truly the issue because they advocate for a free and supportive environment?

These allegations are not only unfounded but also represent a broader attempt to silence artists who dare to challenge oppressive systems. NJZ's fight for their professional freedom is a testament to their courage and commitment to their art, and they should be celebrated, not vilified, for standing up against injustice.

This deliberate distortion of facts represents a calculated attempt to discredit and harm NJZ, which is unacceptable.

We hold such individuals accountable for their actions. Manipulating public opinion through false narratives is unethical and diminishes the integrity of fandoms. Defamation, as seen in this instance, is a serious offense that damages not only the individuals targeted but also the trust and harmony within the fan community.

Through this petition, we demand greater accountability for those engaging in such toxic practices. Specific actions should include:

  • Encouraging social media platforms to monitor and address defamatory content.
  • Educating fan communities about responsible behavior and the consequences of manipulation and defamation.

We believe that by addressing these issues and holding individuals accountable, we can create a more supportive, inclusive, and respectful environment for all fans. Let us work together to ensure that K-pop fandoms remain a positive force, free from toxic and damaging behavior.

And we stand in solidarity with NJZ, a South Korean girl group that has inspired millions with their talent, resilience, and dedication to their craft.

Sincerely, Team Morality
