The Issue

Every day, as a woman living in South Africa, I live with a constant sense of fear, anxiety, and vulnerability. It's an unfortunate reality that women across the nation face heightened risks of femicide and gender-based violence. The statistics are sobering: in South Africa, a woman is killed every three hours, often by someone she knows. This is not just a crisis; it is a national emergency that demands immediate attention and swift action.

The government has made promises to tackle the scourge of gender-based violence, yet women continue to suffer and die at alarming rates. Existing laws and measures are failing to provide us with adequate protection, leaving many women feeling abandoned and powerless.

We need to enforce stricter penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence, establish more shelters and safe havens for women in distress, and provide immediate protection for those at risk. Educational programs focusing on respect and non-violence should be implemented across all schools. Additionally, the deployment of more resources within the criminal justice system can ensure that cases of violence are swiftly handled and justice is served.

International human rights organizations have consistently cited South Africa as having one of the highest rates of violence against women. It's time to collaborate with these bodies to implement tried-and-tested strategies from other countries who have succeeded in reducing gender-based violence.

We cannot stay silent any longer as our mothers, sisters, and daughters live under perpetual threat. We must stand together to demand a country where women can live freely and without fear. Let's galvanize support from every corner to create a South Africa that ensures safety and security for women.

Sign this petition to insist on urgent action from the South African government. Our lives depend on it, and we will not stand idle while our voices can generate change. Together, we can make a difference. Please, add your voice and help us create a safer future for women in South Africa.
