According to the South African Police Service's annual report, over 53,000 sexual offenses were reported in the 2022/2023 period. This overwhelming statistic reflects a systemic failure to protect women and girls from violence and to hold perpetrators accountable. In workplaces, we are routinely marginalized, earning on average 30% less than our male counterparts for the same work, as reported by the World Economic Forum.
In a country with such rich cultural heritage and potential, it is unacceptable that half of its population should live in fear or endure inequality. The current legislative framework, though well-meaning, often lacks the necessary implementation and enforcement. It's time for action, not just promises.
We call upon the South African government to take decisive steps:
