1. Invasive Species are Being Noticed
Even the word invasive has a bad connotation, so you should heed the warning when it refers to flora. Non-native species introduced to American ecosystems likely to affect the economy, the environment, or public health are considered invasive species.
Because they lack natural predators, invasive plants can displace native species and expand swiftly and unchecked.
The United States spends $21 billion annually on removing and containing them, which is astronomically expensive.
So it should be evident that you should try to avoid invasive species. But unfortunately, you may unintentionally buy them at Home Depot’s garden center.
2. Stay Away from These Plants
A wide variety of invasive species, including Japanese and Chinese privet, cogongrass, English ivy, yellow flag iris, Callery pear trees, and Japanese barberry, to mention a few, are sold at Home Depot both in-person and online.
Recently, a Change.org petition asking the Home Depot to discontinue selling these invasives has received support.
Gardeners and homeowners trust Home Depot to sell plants that are good for our neighborhoods, homes, and environment rather than ones that are harmful to our health, economy, and parklands.
