The Issue

In Rhuleni, seven women have been tragically murdered, their lives cut short by senseless violence. Today, the heartbreaking discovery of a baby's body has left our community shaken and devastated. These atrocities continue to pile up, and we are tired. We are tired of being warned about how to avoid violence, how to live small and careful lives just to survive another day. It is time to shift the conversation and take decisive action against gender-based violence.

For too long, the onus has been placed upon women to change their behavior to avoid becoming victims. The pervasive advice to stay safe often means limiting freedom, shrinking dreams, and silencing voices. But safety should not come at the cost of freedom. It is not women's behavior that must change; it is society's behavior that must.

To bring about substantial change, we need to start with education and awareness. This begins at home. Fathers, brothers, friends—it's time to have these crucial conversations and teach the importance of respect and equality. It is time to challenge harmful stereotypes and toxic masculinity that perpetuate a culture of violence.

We call upon local leaders and law enforcement in Rhuleni to take firm action against perpetrators and to implement community programs that empower women and educate men. We demand that our schools and workplaces incorporate gender sensitivity training and create safe environments for women to not only coexist but thrive.

We urge the national government to reinforce policies that protect women and children, ensuring that justice is served swiftly and effectively. Together, we can build a community where women feel safe, valued, and free to live their lives to the fullest.

Change won't happen overnight, but it can begin with one voice, and grow with the support of many. Join us in our fight for justice, equality, and freedom. Sign this petition and stand with us to end gender-based violence in Rhuleni.
