In New York, the Governor has on her desk legislation titled, "The Pharmacy Rescue Package." This legislation would save lives and pharmacy access. The Pharmacy Rescue Package has legislation that includes not allowing plans to force patients to mail order pharmacies. It would also ensure that the insurance companies that have merged with mail order pharmacies and retail pharmacies such as Aetna which has merged with CVS Caremark and CVS will not be able to pay their competitor pharmacies less than their cost of medications. The bill passed quickly through the house and senate with the support of both Democrats and Republicans.
Sadly, we see that legislation is being passed through to Governor's desks in both Republican and Democratic states. Once the governors receive the bills that will save lives, they veto them. This means that most patients' and constituents' voices are not being heard. The power and voices of the people are muted by the power of a small handful of powerful money-hungry lobbyists.
The timing for the governor to sign this legislation is quickly running out as many are forced to mail order or retail pharmacies owned by insurance companies such as CVS which announced that they will be closing 10% of their pharmacies. Pharmacy access is critical to public health.
