Last time we chatted, we were one day away from delivering this petition to Congress—and we did! Thanks to that day of action, plus all your incredible support, the Food Donation Improvement Act has been added to the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act.
Ok, but what does that mean?! The Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act is the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill, AKA a large bill that gets passed every five years. This year, it includes critical provisions designed to dramatically expand children’s access to the federal nutrition programs. It has moved out of committee, and will now move onto theHouse floor to try and get passed.
Why that’s good news: We’re closer than ever to amending the Emerson Act, which will stop senseless food waste and fight food insecurity. We’re also getting crucial visibility with members of Congress, and given everything that’s going on in the US, it’s pretty incredible to have our leaders talking about food waste and insecurity.
How you can help: Contact your reps! We need our Congress people to know that we want the Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids act to be prioritized—and passed. If you can, send them an email of support, use our call tool, or even request a virtual (or in-person!) meeting. Their staff will be able to meet with you, as you share the importance of fighting food waste and insecurity through this bill.
