The Blue Whale is endangered under the EPBC Act.
The Pygmy blue whale is a sub species that visits our shores between November and May.
The coastline around Portland is a known foraging ground for the Blue Whale. This is due to the natural marine wonder, the Bonney Upwelling system which occurs between Portland VIC and Robe SA.
This foraging habitat is critical for species recovery and requires protection from user impacts.
The potential threats to the Blue Whale, as identified in the conservation and management plan include:
- habitat modification
- noise interference
- vessel disturbance/ collision
The government online survey is essential, we encourage all concerned community members to complete the survey before consultation ends on the 31st August.
