The UK nanny workforce is shrinking. We estimate that around 30,000 nannies are now working in the UK, down from approximately 40,000 in 2022.

Government-funded childcare from 9 months and the introduction of VAT on private school fees have reduced demand for full-time nanny roles and pushed families towards temporary and short term arrangements. Professional nannies are facing long job searches, financial insecurity, and fragmented CVs — not because of poor performance, but because stability in the market no longer exists.

Without urgent action, the UK risks losing experienced nannies permanently. This petition calls on the government to recognise nannies as a vital part of the childcare workforce and include them in childcare funding schemes.
