The issue

Every morning, I wake up to the chirping birds of our beloved Selwyn, and gaze out at the beauty of our community. Yet, beneath this serene surface, a relentless financial burden lurks, taking its toll on families around us, including mine. As the cost of living continues to skyrocket—with mortgages, electricity, and food bills slicing chunks from our income—now, unexpectedly, water charges increasing are squeezing us even tighter.

Currently, the water rates imposed by the Selwyn District Council have reached unsustainable levels. At $4 a day for fixed rate and $1,4 for cubic use. This is not just another bill to grumble about; it's a significant burden impact on our day-to-day living and mental well-being. It 18% increase from last year and plan 30% for next year.

Water is not a luxury—it is our lifeline. Families should not be placed under further financial stress over such a basic need. Excessive charges like these are pushing us to the brink and detracting from the quality of life that Selwyn is known for. This is why we are calling upon the Selwyn District Council to take urgent measures in reassessing the current water pricing system.

We propose the introduction of a reasonable and manageable fixed rate fee that guarantees every household access to water without the fear of crippling their finances.

The opportunity to access reasonably priced water will not only alleviate financial strain but will reinvigorate our community's morale, giving parents like me one less thing to worry about.

Join us in this vital cause; sign the petition and stand with the people of Selwyn. Let's demand action from our district council to review and adjust these water rates, ensuring fairness and sustainability for all families in our region. Together, we can make a difference. Your signature could be the change we need.
