How is a Humanoid Robot DIFFERENT?

Hello

To better explain why Humanoid Robots should be banned, I’d like to try and describe how the humanoid is different from other types of advanced machines.

To state the obvious, the Humanoid Robot is shaped like a human - and this interesting design feature is at the core of its uniqueness. The other, controversial advanced machines being thrust on the public - by contrast - aren’t categorically bound to any broad design.

In fact, the Humanoid Robot is made to look like a human specifically so that it can execute its general function - which is to execute any physical task that a human can.

Things such as 'artificial intelligence,' or data centers, or Flock Cameras - the various controversial technologies of our day - are far more specialized (or can be); are subject to innovation; and are more customizable than the humanoid. Consequently, non-humanoid tech and their application and capability can vary enormously.

The ‘data center’ - as example - is not bound by some fundamental design principle to be a tool for government surveillance. We balk at them for this - certainly - because that’s what many of them are being built for - but the data center is, at its most basic, nothing more than a physical place where huge amounts of digital information are processed on computer servers. Afterall, the SETI institute - a nonprofit devoted to finding intelligent extraterrestrial life in the Universe - uses data servers and information complexes to process the findings they gather from deep space. SETI’s so-called data center is not only not housed in a single location, but it also doesn’t participate in government surveillance.

Even artificial intelligence - an advanced, software based tool taking on more and more capability in our world, is perfectly able to be paired down and specialized to serve in disparate economic and academic fields.

But this is dissimilar to the humanoid robot. If a humanoid robot physically does not look like a human - and, furthermore, can’t execute all the same basic activities that a human can - everything from knitting sweaters to wielding assault rifles - then it has not been built correctly.

Put another way, most advanced technologies are like the Phillips screw driver - they’re specialized for use in narrow circumstances. The humanoid robot, by contrast, is like the Swiss Army Knife - necessarily capable of “any and everything."

Thank you for taking the time to sign and share this petition.

Michael Christensen
