A THOUGHT ON 'TECH OPTIMISM' AND A ROBOT SIGHTING IN NEW YORK

Before I share another Humanoid Robot sighting, here's a brief remark on a podcast that recapped presentations from the recent Davos conference in Switzerland. It was a fascinating discussion (LINKED HERE).

To get to the point, the broad aim of the conference speakers (at least the ones I heard) was to paint these developing technologies in an 'optimistic light' - and to, where possible, steer the general public away from pessimistic fantasies of doom and gloom.

While I don't believe in 'doom and gloom,' I found their approach and demeanor disagreeable.

I don't think one has to be a 'doom and gloomer' or rapacious contrarian in order to keep total skepticism towards these tools. In no small part because no one seems perfectly able to define what these tools are becoming, what they'll be able to do, or what purpose they'll serve. It seems few individuals have any conceptual box in which to put these tools - it seems many otherwise brilliant proponents don't feel too uncomfortable in thinking about these tools in fantastical, even quasi-spiritualistic a manner.

It holds, in my reasoning, that if a topic of untold social importance is sufficiently incomprehensible, then neither 'pessimism' nor 'optimism' are terms that can be applied... instead, in such a situation one is either cautious or not.
