The community in Lanark Road and Longstone has launched a petition to propose a constructive way forward for their Spaces for People scheme.
The existing bollard scheme has:
o Failed to increase cycling according to official council data
o Is officially graded as having a negative impact on disabled people, businesses and residents
o Does not align with other council priorities around their Equal Pavements Pledge, 20 minute neighbourhoods, or support young people to safely access bus stops to benefit from the forthcoming free bus travel for under 22s
In spite of this, the council is planning to make the scheme permanent.
Instead, Keep Edinburgh Moving member group, South West Edinburgh in Motion (SWEM), is suggesting a constructive way forward with a community-led proposal to address all the issues above.
This approach may be of interest to other communities with schemes that have failed to increase cycling and which discriminate against certain groups.
If you live near, visit or travel through Lanark Road and Longstone, please sign and share the petition on the link below if you agree the suggestions are a positive way forward.
