Greenbelt Development Clears Final Hurdles

We would like to thank everyone for joining with us on this journey in democracy for our environment. After a controversial public hearing on April 27th and third reading May 18th, it appears we have reached the end of the road. The Town of Qualicum Beach is poised to adopt the Estate Residential rezoning.

The deciding vote on third reading was Councillor Robert Filmer who remarked that after the “amount of staff hours” and tax dollars invested in the process, “We have to look at something. You can’t just say no…”

One by one, similarly reasoned decisions all around the Salish Sea are why the Coastal Douglas Fir biogeoclimatic zone is among the most at-risk in British Columbia. Our ecosystems and democracy face death by a thousand cuts, driven by irrationality and short-sightedness.

To those many who have asked, we are still awaiting a decision on our related court case.
