As Elon Musk effectively admitted on X recently, the platform's algorithm penalizes external links, which has led people to resort to cumbersome workarounds to share external links on X such as putting the link in a reply to the tweet where they describe the content of the article they're sharing.

While people disagree about some of the other changes that were recently introduced on X, there seems to be a near universal agreement, regardless of ideology and politics, that deprioritizing external links has made the user experience much worse.

Not only does it creates bad incentives, by making posts that give sources for their claims less visible and encouraging people to write threads when a single tweet would have sufficed, but it also makes it harder for people to share elsewhere on the Internet, which used to be a major strength of Twitter.
