Iron Line – Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT) Update
Following discussions with key stakeholders, Cumberland Council can confirm that the byway running through Hodbarrow Reserve, Millom, will be retained as a Byway Open to All Traffic (BOAT).
The Iron Line project team has been working closely with partners to develop a range of interventions designed to both protect the local ecology and enhance the overall visitor experience. The small number of users who access the BOAT by vehicle will be able to continue to do so.
The project will focus on improving accessibility for all, including walkers and wheelchair users, through the introduction of enhanced path surfaces, updated signage, and new interpretation boards. These improvements will inform everyone about the reserve’s rich and diverse ecology, while enabling more people to enjoy the natural beauty of Hodbarrow Reserve.
This work supports the wider vision of the Iron Line project to create an inclusive, engaging, and environmentally sensitive destination.
