Wednesday at 4 pm: tell the fair board no data center at Lake Perris

The Lake Perris fair board meets this Wednesday, Oct 28, at 4 pm. It's the last meeting before the board sets its November 18 agenda, so this is important.

Wednesday, Oct 28, 4:00 pm Administration Building Board Room, 18700 Lake Perris Drive, Perris Directions in Google Maps

Try to get there by 3:45. Enter at the palm-lined driveway off Lake Perris Drive, park beside the Administration building and follow the signs. Bring a sign if you'd like. In September, people held theirs on the covered patio outside, where the board could see them through the windows.

The Global Stack agreement isn't on the agenda, so the board can't vote on it Wednesday. You can still talk about it during public comment (item 5), which comes early in the meeting. Ask staff at the door for a speaker card. In September, people in the room were called before people on Zoom. You'll have up to three minutes, so a few sentences is plenty. Say it your way, or use this: "No study, no lease, no data center. End the agreement and put it on your November 18 agenda."

You don't have to speak. Showing up counts. A full room tells the board what we think before anyone says a word. After public comment, the board meets in closed session and asks the audience to step out, so most people head home then.

If the board doesn't have a quorum, come anyway: in September, public comment went ahead without one. The only reason to stay home is a cancellation, so check SaveLakePerris.com before you head out.

Can't be there? Join on Zoom at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81337438988 (meeting ID 813 3743 8988) and raise your hand to speak, or call +1 669 444 9171 and press *9. You can also email the board before the meeting. There's a ready-made email at SaveLakePerris.com, or write your own to socalfair@socalfair.com.

A quick reminder of what's at stake. The agreement the board signed in August could lead to a lease of up to 100 years. The fairgrounds is state land in unincorporated Riverside County, so city bans can't reach it. Perris voted 5 to 0 to ban data centers citywide, and that still doesn't touch the fairgrounds. The fair board can end this agreement at any time with 30 days' notice. That's what we're asking it to do.

Other fairgrounds are saying no. On Sept 15, Ventura's fair board voted 5 to 3 to end its agreement with the same company, and on Oct 21, Santa Barbara's Earl Warren Showgrounds, which had turned down the same company's request to sign an agreement, said it won't consider a data center on its property.

The fair belongs to all of Riverside County. Whether you live in Perris, Moreno Valley, Menifee, Riverside, Mead Valley, Nuevo, Temecula, Hemet or anywhere else in the county, you're welcome Wednesday. Bring one person with you.

Thank you to the nearly 2,400 people who have signed. For the latest news and updates, follow @SaveLakePerris on Instagram or facebook.com/SaveLakePerris, and watch the full videos on YouTube.
