Stop construction of nuclear power plant on Lake Victoria

Stop construction of nuclear power plant on Lake Victoria
The Issue
We are deeply concerned about the Government of Kenya's plan to build a nuclear power plant in Siaya County, located on the shores of Lake Victoria. This decision has been made against the wishes of local communities, and it presents dire risks to both health and the environment. The transparency and honesty of the information being shared about this project are questionable, with twisted facts and outright falsehoods being propagated.
The lake is a lifeline for countless communities not only in Kenya but also in neighboring countries like Uganda and Tanzania, all of whom depend on it for fishing, freshwater and transportation. Shockingly, these neighboring countries haven't been consulted about a project that will likely affect them as well. This lack of cross-border dialogue is deeply negligent, especially given the potential radiation risks to tens of millions of East Africans.
Moreover, the location near a major water body raises the stakes even higher. Any accident or leakage could have catastrophic consequences on a wide-reaching scale. The ecological balance, not to mention human health, would be placed in serious jeopardy. There's also great concern about waste disposal and how that would be managed without compromising the integrity of the lake and its ecosystems over the long term.
We urge the Government of Kenya to halt this plan immediately. Alternative energy sources, which are safer and more sustainable in the long run, should be explored and considered.
Join us in calling for the immediate termination of this nuclear power project. Together, let's protect the health, safety, and future of the Lake Victoria region. Please sign and share this petition to make our collective voice heard.
