The Trump administration, ICE and CoreCivic are trying to open a new ICE detention in the city, read more here. If this is realized, this will be the biggest ICE immigrant detention center in California with a capacity of up to 2,500 beds! We know more detention will mean more family separation, abuse and raids targeting farmworking communities in Kern County and other immigrant communities across California.
For months, local residents, the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Rapid Response Network of Kern and the CA Dignity not Detention Coalition have been sounding the alarm against CoreCivic’s plan to open a new ICE detention facility in CA City, it’s history of breaking the law opening facilities without the right permits and history of abuse in the detention facilities they run. Our advocacy is working! It has pushed CoreCivic to submit a request for a business license in front of the CA City Planning Commission.
Now we continue to mobilize to continue to uplift our demand that CA City must deny any permits for the facility to open.
Updated talking points will be shared on Tuesday morning.
