Bengaluru was the GARDEN CITY! Why? Because it had a green cover..... more than 70% of it, to be precise! It's fall to infamy was for the fact that in a matter of just 4 decades, that dropped to less than 10% and now it is less than 3%!
Such a sharp destruction of ecology has not been experienced by any other city in India! This is the worst side of development that any city can showcase! And most of it is due to lack of city governance.
The city lacks its own empowered governance, the 74th Amendment has not been implemented, and the State Govt keeps interfering in all aspects of govt via multiple parastatals and agencies, that work at cross purposes.
The laws that provide protection to the Green Cover, are completely ignored.
This year has been particularly depressing for Bangalore, which has already borne the brunt of such devastation.
- First the Bannerghatta ESZ reduction by a whopping 100 SQM!
- Then the KRDCL Bangalore Surrounding Roads project targeting nearly 10,000 trees!
- And now the BDA's PRR project that targets 33,000 odd trees. Earlier the PRR was targeting 15,000 odd trees, so now the number has already doubled.
- And then there are other BBMP and BDA projects that target thousands of trees.
- The BMRCL continues on its rampage targeting thousands of trees, as usual.
What hope does Bengaluru have?
