Stop banning hairpieces in our school
The Issue
As a student who proudly wears braids, I find it disheartening to face restrictions on hairpieces at our school. It's not just a hairstyle; it's a vibrant expression of our culture as Black individuals. Our hair, along with the way we choose to style it, plays an integral role in our identity and heritage. Simply put, a hairpiece or braided styles should not and do not affect our capacity to learn or the quality of education we receive.
The school's policy against hairpieces feels like an attack on our cultural heritage and individuality. Many students in our school use hairpieces not only for cultural expression but also for practical reasons. Hairpieces and braids can protect our natural hair, which is more prone to breakage. Denying us the use of hairpieces is denying us a way to safeguard our personal grooming and health rights.
Educational environments should be inclusive and respect diversity—embracing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our student body. According to the Crown Act Campaign, more than 80% of Black women report having to change their natural hair to conform to workplace or educational dress codes. These policies can have damaging psychological effects on students by indirectly indicating that their natural looks are unacceptable.
We propose a revision of the current dress code to permit hairpieces and braided styles, allowing students the freedom to express their cultural identities. Our school should prioritize inclusivity and focus on more substantial educational issues, rather than policing hairstyles which have no bearing on a student’s academic performance.
Join us in urging our school administration to reconsider its stance on hairpieces. Allow all students the opportunity to enjoy their right to express their individuality and heritage without fear of penalty or exclusion. Sign the petition today and help us enact these crucial changes.
