Petition updateStop allowing “gay panic” as an excuse for murder in AustraliaSA only state where “gay panic” still legal

Good morning, It’s hard to believe it’s been a month since we won the abolishment of the disgraceful 'gay panic' defence for murder in QLD. It was a victory so many of us fought 5 long years for. But now South Australia is the only state remaining where ‘gay panic’ is on the legal books as a valid provocation defence to murder. While Premier Jay Weatherill has expressed his ‘disgust’ at the law, he’s done nothing to scrap it. Today, things could change. The law reform group advising the SA Premier has just released a report recommending that the archaic gay panic law be axed. But there’s a risk the Premier won’t act urgently on ditching gay panic, and instead wait until a 2nd report on other recommended reforms is released. This is ridiculous - it's a homophobic and indefensible law. We know this can work. You helped me enormously in getting our QLD victory, so please spare a few minutes this afternoon to ensure we tip SA too. Please email SA Premier Jay Weatherill at urging him to immediately introduce a Bill to Parliament to abolish the gay panic defence today -- cheltenham@parliament.sa.gov.au If the public, politicians and now legal experts all agreeing “gay panic” is overdue from being abolished in the final state, the Premier must not hide behind more delays. Thank you, Paul. Ps here is a news story about the SA context - http://indaily.com.au/news/2017/05/04/sa-law-indirectly-sanctions-killing-gay-people-law-reform-institute/
