The Issue

We, the students and members of the Stony Brook University community, are calling for immediate transparency, accountability, and meaningful change following a recent student death on campus.

Many students learned about this tragedy not through official university communication, but through anonymous social platforms. This lack of acknowledgment has left students feeling confused, unsupported, and disregarded during a time when clarity and compassion are essential.

This is not an isolated concern. Students have expressed ongoing frustration with the intense academic pressure at Stony Brook University and the limited accessibility and responsiveness of campus counseling services. Reports of long wait times, difficulty securing appointments, and inadequate support have contributed to a growing sense that student mental health is not being treated as a priority.

Additionally, members of the community have raised concerns that previous incidents earlier this year were not clearly communicated to the broader student body, further contributing to a culture of silence around serious issues affecting student well-being.

We are not writing this to assign blame, but to demand better.

We call on Stony Brook University to:

Issue timely, transparent, and compassionate communication regarding incidents that impact student safety and well-being
Expand and improve mental health services, including increasing staffing, reducing wait times, and providing more accessible support options
Acknowledge and actively address the impact of academic pressure on student mental health
Provide immediate support resources for students affected by campus tragedies
Offer financial and logistical support to families and close friends impacted by student deaths, where appropriate
Create open forums for students to voice concerns and be heard by administration
Students deserve to feel safe, supported, and informed within their own community. Silence and inaction only deepen harm.

We urge the administration to take meaningful steps toward prioritizing student well-being—not just in words, but through visible, sustained action.

This petition represents a call for care, accountability, and change.
