The newly-elected prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, just announced that Canadian warplanes would be withdrawn from the US-led coalition to wage war in Syria and Iraq. This is a partial victory because he did not, at the same time, withdraw the 70 Canadian trainers that remain on the ground in Iraq. However, the trainers cannot possibly inflict the same amount of damage on Syria and Iraq as the CF-18 fighter-bombers. Therefore, we are gratified that our humble petition had some effect on Canada's decision to end the previous Harper government's participation in the bombing campaign. We are also gratified that Green Party leader, MP Elizabeth May, one of the MP's to whom the petition was directed, actually signed the petition. Thanks also to the 727 persons who supported the campaign.
