It has been my experience that, though the driver may dim his headlights, these auxiliary lights remain on and are so bright that they dazzle the eyes of the oncoming drivers. This significantly diminishes whatever night-adaptation they may have and thereby creates a danger to others they subsequently encounter on the road.
