University of Michigan Professor John Cheney-Lippold has been criticized by some supporters of Israel for not providing a letter of recommendation to a student seeking to study for a semester in that country.

Professor Cheney-Lippold has explained that his decision was a matter of conscience, in line with his support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions Movement against Israel.  He has explained that he is an advocate for Palestinian human rights, and believes that supporting a student's desire to study in Israel can conflict with his advocacy.

We support Professor Cheney-Lippold's decision.  We, too, are supporters of the BDS Movement, and would not provide a letter of support for a student seeking to study in an Israeli University.
