We have some encouraging news to share.

On June 22, the North West Community Council voted 3–2 to reject the proposed Heritage Development Agreement for 1262 Bedford Highway (Honeycote).

This is an important result and a testament to what can happen when a community comes together. Thank you to everyone who attended the Public Hearing, spoke, wrote letters, signed the petition, and shared information with neighbours. Your voices made a difference.

However, this is not the end of the process.

The developer has two potential options:

  • Appeal the Council's decision within 14 days (by July 6); or
  • Apply for a Demolition Order. If approved by HRM, this would allow the heritage cottage to be demolished after three years, after which the property could be redeveloped under the existing land-use by-laws.

The coming weeks will be critical. We need to remain informed, engaged, and ready to respond if further action is required.

Here's how you can help

1. Join our Facebook community – Stewards of Bedford
Stay informed and connected. We'll use the group to share updates on this application, explain what happens next, and let everyone know when community action is needed.

3. Complete the HRM Suburban Plan survey by June 30
This is one of the most important opportunities we have to influence how Bedford grows over the coming decades. The Suburban Plan will help shape HRM's future Municipal Planning Strategy and Land-Use By-laws, affecting where and how development occurs throughout our community.

If we want growth that protects Bedford's heritage, neighbourhood character, green spaces, infrastructure, and quality of life, we need as many residents as possible to participate.

You can also share your thoughts directly with the HRM Suburban Plan Team:

This result has shown something important: community participation matters. When residents take the time to speak up, decision-makers listen.

Let's keep the momentum going. Together, we can help ensure Bedford grows in a way that strengthens our community while protecting the qualities that make it such a special place to live.

Thank you again for your continued support.
