Good morning all. I am happy to announce that we have reached our initial goal of 100 signatures in just a few days. St. Johns County Water rates have been the butt of jokes and a source of frustration for county residents for many years. I have attached the billing rates for Ponte Vedra which illustrates the 45% difference that the rest of the county is  paying compared to those near Ponte Vedra. I would suggest that everyone take a close look at their next bill and see how much you are paying for consumption above 5,000 gallons. The average irrigation cycle consumes approximately 2,000 gallons of water. Those watering twice per week will consume 16,000 gallons per month for irrigation alone. As per the tiered rate system, that will put most residents in the Block 3 tier which is the third highest. County residents not near Ponte Vedra will pay a rate of $6.62 for Block 3 and a rate of $9.60 should they surpass 20,000 gallons of usage. That is more than 3 times the base rate of $3.14 for 0-5,000 gallons.

St. Johns County is well aware of these facts and their stance is that they are attempting to promote conservation. The truth of the matter is that consumption for irrigation is necessary and most residents do not have a choice. We can either consume the necessary water to maintain our properties and pay high rates or face fines by our CDD. Those willing to consider installing a shallow well can pay upwards of $1600 for a 50' well in some parts of the county. The decision to install a well should not hinge upon high water rates but many are forced to spend money in order to save money. While I believe in conservation, I do not subscribe to the theory that people should be punished for consuming necessary resources.

I would urge each of you to continue to share this information with friends and neighbors so that we can help facilitate change within our county together. If you have not already added a comment to this petition, I would suggest that you take time to provide your specific thoughts by adding your comments. These signatures and comments go directly to the Utility Commissioner in addition to the five members of the Board of County Commissioners. Thank you again for all of  your support.
