Ban Microbeads in WA

St Catherine's College Environment and Sustainability Team needs YOU to sign this petition to ban micro-beads in WA. Our team is hoping to get as many signatures on this petition as possible to legitimise a letter we will write to the State Government.

Firstly, what are Micro-beads?

Micro-beads are tiny plastics smaller than 2 millimeters. Micro-beads are usually found in facial wash, body scrubs, and toothpaste as exfoliators. They may even be in makeup, lip gloss, and nail polish. Microbeads aren't filtered out in most wastewater treatments.

Consequently, micro-plastic particles are found in bays, gulfs and seas worldwide, as well as inland waterways. Plastic microbeads absorb toxic chemicals from organic pollutants, pesticides, flame retardants, and other industrial chemicals. These toxic-coated beads are then consumed by fish and other marine organisms and biomagnification occurs as these toxic chemicals go up the food chain. A single micro-bead can be up to a million times more toxic than the water around it.

Let's work together to preserve and protect marine life, as well as prevent catastrophic health implications for us consuming these toxic plastics in our food. Solutions can be as simple as taking a second longer when choosing your personal care products and signing important petitions like this!
