Square Enix: Give Nintendo Switch Owners a Fair Upgrade Path
The Issue
Square Enix is repeatedly releasing enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 versions of games that were already sold on Nintendo Switch without offering existing owners either a free or reasonably priced upgrade path.
This policy currently affects games including:
- FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster;
- DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition;
- OCTOPATH TRAVELER;
- OCTOPATH TRAVELER II;
- STAR OCEAN: THE SECOND STORY R and potentially other future Nintendo Switch 2 re-releases.
For several of these titles, Square Enix has also confirmed that save data from the Nintendo Switch version cannot be transferred to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
As a result, loyal customers who have already purchased these games must buy substantially the same game again at full price to access improved resolution, performance or quality-of-life features. They may also be forced to abandon existing playthroughs and start again.
This is not a request for every Nintendo Switch 2 enhancement to be provided free of charge. A reasonably priced upgrade pack would be a fairer alternative to requiring a complete second purchase.
Other publishers — and even Square Enix itself in selected cases — have demonstrated that free or paid Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade paths are possible. The absence of an upgrade path is therefore not an unavoidable feature of the platform.
We ask Square Enix to:
- Offer existing Nintendo Switch owners a free or reasonably priced upgrade path to the corresponding Nintendo Switch 2 version.
- Enable save-data transfer whenever technically possible.
- Clearly disclose upgrade eligibility, save compatibility, physical-media format and differences between versions before pre-orders open.
- Apply a consistent and consumer-friendly cross-generation policy to existing and future Nintendo Switch 2 re-releases.
- Reconsider the current policies for FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster, DRAGON QUEST XI S, OCTOPATH TRAVELER and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II.
- Many of us support Square Enix because we value its games and want to continue purchasing them.
- Asking existing customers to repurchase the same titles at full price, while abandoning their save data, discourages that support.
We are asking Square Enix for a fair upgrade option — not another full-price purchase.
