The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony was yesterday, and legendary English Diver Tom Daley was part of a massive statement about inclusion, particularly LGBTQ rights.

The 28-year-old has been shining a light on a very sombre number: it is a criminal offence in 35 of 56 sovereign states of the Commonwealth to be LGBTQ. In some countries, laws are incredibly severe and extend to life imprisonment.

Daley was joined by Bisi Alimi, Nigeria; Glenroy Murray, Jamaica; Dutee Chand, India; Moud Goba, Zimbabwe; Jason Jones, Trinidad and Tobago and Prossy Kakooza, Uganda.

What a great example of how sports can shine a light for inclusion and the need for Freddie to unite all fans to keep the message going as we have a long way to go to achieving unity and equality for all.

(For sports fans not from the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries, all with some historical ties to the United Kingdom, and this is the Commonwealth's "Olympic Games.")
