We are campaigning to bring Spelthorne (Ashford, Staines, Shepperton and Sunbury) into TFL zone 6 and would like your support. We are holding a public meeting on Thursday 7th July at 7.30pm at Thomas Knyvett College, Ashford (situated near to Ashford Station) and invite you along to meet/have your say/ with Spelthorne's business leaders, school teachers, councillors and other residents from our community who support our campaign. Being in zone 6 would mean being able to use an Oyster card into and out of London from our towns for easier and less expensive rail travel. About 70% of Spelthorne's working population travel to work by car and we believe that many more would use the train service if they could get a fairer deal. We would see an improvement in the quality of our air and the money saved could help stimulate the local economy. As London's population is growing a lack of affordable accommodation and better quality of life are encouraging commuters and businesses to move outwards towards the boundaries and beyond. Spelthorne is at the forefront of this change, due to the opportunities it offers and its unique position. With a high employment record our towns are attracting new businesses and residents necessitating the building of new offices and accommodation. As Spelthorne grows and flourishes so our transport facilities will need to accommodate the needs of residents and commuters particularly our rail links with the capital. The use of Oyster cards would be an enhancement facilitating ease of travel as well as improving affordability, as at present they can only be used from Waterloo as far as the TFL boundary to Feltham and Hampton, where rail tickets need to be purchased for travel onwards into Spelthorne. We believe the zone 6 boundary should be extended into our borough and that by doing so would bring a real benefit to local people and the community in general. Our campaign has very strong public support and the backing of our local councillors and MP as well as the Spelthorne Business Forum.
