Harsher penalties for animal abuse in New Zealand

Zorro was a beautiful gentle horse who was previously much loved. Unfortunately he ended up in the hands of Tania Harrison. Zorro was tied to a tree and not fed for up to a month at a time. Despite neighbours offering to feed him, Harrison refused to allow it. Zorro was eventually found  after a report to the SPCA and being too weak to walk, was euthanized.

Tania Harrison was convicted and sentenced on one charge of reckless ill-treatment of an animal, barred from owning horses for the next 10 years and ordered to pay $737 in reparations and legal fees, a sentence that I and many others feel is woefully inadequate.
In images released by the SPCA in the case against Harrison, Zorro is skin and bone with an injury to his hind leg, found tied to a tree and left weeks without adequate food or water. He was so weak, an SPCA inspector couldn't even walk him off the property.

I and many others believe that the sentence for the torturous and systematic abuse of Zorro is nowhere near harsh enough. We call on Meka Whaiteri, the newly appointed NZ government minister responsible for animal welfare, to look into the sentence for this case and take measures to ensure that penalties for animal cruelty are consistent with the level of abuse that has taken place.

RIP darling Zorro.
