Early Thanks + Asking for Help
Hello Everyone!
Seeing this much early support for this petition is genuinely really gratifying. It shows me that I'm not the only one that cares about this issue, and I think we can build the support we need to get attention towards this issue.
However, we are going to need to get at least 100 signatures in order to even remotely be considered seriously, and we need everyone to step in. Former students, current students, members of the Southside community, and ideally faculty and staff, should be aware of this campaign. If you have already signed, you can further help by letting these people know about the campaign, educate them about the issue at hand (I suggest the Book Riot link already in the petition, as well as articles from NPR, The Texas Tribune, and the book ban list itself.), and push them to decide what they think is right for the Southside community.
Also, I do just want to warn you all now, the weird part about this whole debacle is that for all we as the public may know, this may be a legally required list to adhere to. Hopefully an answer will come from the district sooner rather than later, but just keep in mind that our pressure still needs to be strongly applied, so we can even get to that point. I cannot emphasize enough, do not harass the district or anyone within it. For all we know, their hands are tied, so do not assume Southside ISD or any of its employees are evil (they are not.)
Lastly, as you probably noticed, I am not identifying myself, the petition creator, as of right now. I feel this issue is not one that requires that I put my name on it, and frankly I don't want attention to be drawn towards me, the petition creator. If for whatever reason this is required to change I will let you know, but for now just consider me a concerned former student.
Anyway, I hope we can all push this issue further!
