SWR confirmed they will not meet the deadline of 31st Dec 2019 to make the station accessible with the installation of lifts. The best estimate is Sept 2020, but it is likely that this optimistic. My feeling is that this will slip.

The overview and scrutiny board may sound quite boring... but this was actually the very first opportunity we have had to come face to face with the rail company in such a setting, and the statements and petition gave a strong impression in what was a packed hall. It was clear that councillors from the board (covering all parties) were really unhappy with the responses given. Observing after our intro, it didn't go unnoticed that SWR not only were just giving excuses, they weren't offering any apologies or attempting to understand the issues faced by passengers. Anyway, it was accepted it was good they attended to state their position.

I have to say I felt this would happen several years ago, and on a personal note I think we will always struggle with the franchise system as it is. However, we are where we are.

What happens next?

  • It's been agreed to investigate what sanctions can be imposed on SWR for breaching the franchise contract.
  • It was agreed that the council will write to the Sec of Transport to outline the "disgust" at the situation. The wording is to be confirmed. I do think this will help as it does underline we have backing from the whole council.

Hopefully SWR had a shock. I expect they will read this, and hope they understand their actions are not acceptable. We need to make sure this doesn't become a can to be kicked down the road. Whilst there are lots of groups and people helping out and I am aware we need to get everyone together and reform the band as to say. I am more than open to any ideas or initiatives. I'm also happy to fill you in on anymore detail, views of the meeting etc. Please drop me an email or tweet if you want to help ben.smith3000@hotmail.com or https://twitter.com/BenSmith40
