I have written today to The Twentieth Century Society which is based in London and campaigns to protect outstanding buildings. Give yourself a minute to glance over the letter - but if you decide not to, I still want to thank you for your continued support. This is especially appreciated during these most challenging and uncertain times for everyone.
Please remember to spread the word about our campaign and to Share Share Share the petition with your family, friends and online. Let's get to 200 signatures before Easter's out!
LETTER: Our Campaign to 'Save The Regent'
I wanted to inform you about the proposed demolition of the above 1930's landmark building in South Shields, Tyne & Wear. There appears to be no clear or obvious way in making a representation or objection. Therefore, I have applied for Listed Building Status with Historic England and created a petition to save the structure at:
www.change.org/p/historic-england-save-south-shields-regent-cinema-from-demolition
The campaign seeks to highlight the value of our shared social, cultural and architectural heritage. I have informed the MP for South Shields and the three ward councillors for the Westoe ward; shared the petition on various social media pages to engage the wider community; discussed the campaign with the local press; and I understand that the planners at South Tyneside Council are also aware of the application with Historic England.
The site received planning permission for conversion to apartments in May 2017. Details about this preferred proposal over the building's demolition can be accessed at www.southtyneside.gov.uk under Planning & environment/Planning/Search planning applications/Search by reference number (ST/0146/17/FUL): Conversion to 37 dwellings, three retail shops and a coffee shop, alterations to existing access and third floor extension, provision of 54 space car park with servicing layby and demolition of existing offshot to accommodate wider vehicle access.
You may also wish to refer to the 2020 notice on the same portal (ST/0196/20/FUL): Prior notification of proposed demolition under general permitted development order 2015 (please note that the campaign does not relate to the adjacent Londonderry Hall).
Signatories of the petition firmly believe that demolition here would be wrong and we must save this landmark building now for future generations. Many thanks for your time and interest in our campaign to "Save The Regent". I remain available for any questions that you may have or advice that you are happy to give to support our cause.
