A container containing more than 138KG of rhino horn, more than 3.1 tons of animal (lion) bones on the banned list from South Africa imported through Tien Sa Port (Da Nang) was declared as wood detected by the authorities.

On July 18th Da Nang Cistoms Department informed that it had just seized a large amount of imported goods suspected of being rhino horn and wildlife bones in a shipment from South Africa to Tien Sa port.

According to the dossier in early June 2021, through professional measures, the Customs Department of Ho Chi Minh City. Da Nang discovered a line transporting goods from South Africa to Vietnam suspected of being banned goods, so they set up a project to fight and closely monitor the shipment’s journey.

After applying professional measures, on the morning of July 17, Da Nang Customs Department coordinated with the Anti-smuggling and Investigations Department - General Police Department of Customs, EnvironmentalPolice (C05) - Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Security, Da Nang Police, Coast Guard Region 2 Command and Da Nang Port Border Hisrd Station - Da Nang City BDDBP Command searched a container transported from South Africa to Tien Sa port - Da Nang has a suspicion that imported goods are not properly declared.

The interdisciplinary force discovers more than 138KG of animal horns and 3.1 tons of animal bones suspected to be bones of animals on the List of wild fauna and Flora species use specified in the Appendix of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The above goods are packed by cartons wrapped tightly with nylon rope wit different sizes, types and weights and are stowed in containers and declared with the commodity code as wood.

Da Nang Customs Department is presiding over and co ordinating with relevant forces and authorities to verify investigate and clarify violations of individuals and units importing the above shipment to handle according to regulations determined.
