African countries that support the African Elephant Action Plan have met to discuss their strategy at CITES CoP18 to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in May and June this year.

Their views are in direct opposition to those of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

African Elephant Action Plan countries believe that the ban should remain in force to protect Africa’s last elephants whilst SADC believes that the stockpiles ivory should be sold.
