But does SVAS really intake that many every year? 

The answer is no. You can look up their yearly intakes located here:

And since they love to bring up the pound, the Minot City pound brought in 772 in the same year and they were not hand picked by staff for quick adoptions, never turned away, and most of them were saved. (PS you can also look at SVAS kill rate in the link above.)
