While we are making progress, recent events remind us why we cannot let up. The Zoning Board of Appeals recently approved four significant variances for a project on Rockefeller Road despite concerns from nearby residents, citing that it was consistent with the zoning code and that the developer's proposed sidewalks provided a community benefit. Throughout that meeting, there was repeated praise for the Planning Board and town planning staff, leaving many residents with the impression that the outcome had been decided long before public comments were heard.

We must make sure the Town Board listens to the residents it was elected to represent — not the developers who would benefit from this proposal.

Many of us have felt the same way throughout this process. Since this effort began last November, it has often seemed like an uphill battle. But every packed meeting, every email, every petition signature, and every person willing to stand up has made a difference. The fact that these zoning changes have not been approved is proof that our voices matter.

Moving forward in the face of overwhelming public opposition would be an affront to the democratic process and would send the message that the Town Board is unwilling to listen to its own residents.

Now is the time to keep the pressure on.
