Petition updateSony — Don't Kill Physical PlayStation GamesSony Reassigns Disc Factory Workers as PlayStation Moves Away from Physical Discs

A new report highlights another sign of the industry's shift away from physical media. Sony's last wholly owned disc production facility in Thalgau, Austria, is being repurposed, with around 300 employees set to be retrained to manufacture optical microlenses instead of game discs.

According to the report, the factory currently produces around 600,000 discs per day, with approximately half of that output dedicated to PlayStation. As demand for physical media continues to decline, Sony is transitioning the facility rather than closing it, allowing employees to move into new roles instead of facing redundancy.

For those of us who care about physical games, this is another reminder that the infrastructure supporting physical media is steadily disappearing. While it's encouraging to see workers being reassigned, the continued reduction of disc production reinforces why preserving physical game ownership remains an important issue.
