Anthony Merante was the only member of the Yonkers city council to oppose the 2023 noise ordinance that gave our city one of the least restrictive noise limits in the nation. He sat on the council's environmental committe, and when Tasha Diaz presented her deceptive plan to make Yonkers louder, Merante pushed back. He did it in a charming, friendly way.  But it was clear from his skeptical, somewhat sarcastic questions and comments that he knew the deal, and he wasn't going to be conned. He and fellow Republican Mike Breen were the only two committee votes against the ordinance and a couple of weeks later when it was approved by the whole council, with no discussion or debate.   Merante has been a long-time independent, a lone voice in the council .  He's determined and relentless. How else could he run against Andrea Stewart Cousins, our entrenched and powerful representative in the state senate?
